Paddle your own canoe

I did it, I managed to get my hands on a copy of Ten Canoes. I was so full of squee and delight! There were two discs in the case, so obviously I put in the first disc assuming the movie would be on there. Um, no. They were mini-docco's on how they made the canoes, the huts, the spears and of the life of the people portrayed in the film today. All interesting stuff, but hardly rivetting, as there was no commentary and little dialogue. Then a trailer for Ten Canoes came on and I was excitted all over again.

So I put in disc two. And watched the interview with Rolf De Heer. It was interesting, the way he and David Guillipilli (I have no idea if that spellign is correct and frankly not enough caffine in my system to care at this stage) came up with the idea and how the story evolved from one idea into another. I was terribly excitted. David and Rolf had teamed up for the Tracker, a movie I liked a lot. Rolf talked how at the time of conception there had been an influx of movies centred around an Indigenous theme. (Incidently, my God Father is an Indigenous actor. He hasn't acted in a long while since parts for Indigenous men are few and far between)

I am most interested given the setting of the film. Originally they were going to make it a love story, where the two young lovers are just about to get together and then in comes the white ocupation and slaughters everyone. But they decided against it. They didn't want to idolise the past as being idyllic. So they decided to set it back in the era of Myth, back where everything and anything is possible. And if you've ever had the pleasure of being told Dreaming stories, even new ones, (We have one for the Sydney Harbour Bridge even) then you can really understand the attraction and appeal to the movie.

Then there were dazzling trailers for other movies. Australian and Independant films. If there was a film on the disc, I failed to find it, or my dvd player failed to read and play it. So really, I cannot say how the movie was, I had to take my little discs back before I got the chance to really find it and watch it.

I think the easist way to get to watch it, is to buy the movie so at least that way, I have a book/chapter description to refer to. (hopefully)
DO I have faith the movie will be good? Why yes, yes I do. I may have to paddle my own canoe to find ten, but believe me, I am still itching to watch it. Rolf De Heer has never steered me wrong.

I've searched all the video hire places over here and can't get my hands on it. I think I am going to have to do as you and buy it for myself.
